A seventh term of office for UAE President
United Arab Emirates, Politics, 12/3/2001
The higher council of the UAE held a meeting to re-elect Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al-Nahyan as a president for the Republic for the 7th term of office, while Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashed al-Maktoum will be elected as a vice President for the third time after he had succeeded his father, the ruler of Dubai, the late Sheikh, Rashed Bin Saeed al-Maktoum in 1991.
However, the meeting of the UAE council, which is considered the higher political body in the state, composed of the ruler of the seven UAE Emirates, members of the federation, coincides with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the United Arab Emirates on December 2nd, 1971.
Despite the fact this renewing the term of office for both Sheikh Zayed and Sheikh al-Maktoum is a great occasion and commemoration to the commander of the state of the UAE in a march of 3 decades of build up. However, many others see in the meeting of the higher council, the re-election of Sheikh Zayed and his deputy as marking the beginning of a new phase of national work that may also include a government reshuffle that might lead to canceling and merging of certain ministries.
