On possible American strikes against Iraq

The al-Khaleij daily issued in Sharja on Friday quoted a Syrian diplomatic sources as saying that any strikes to be directed against Iraq might result in a regional tension.

The source made it clear that the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara was clear regarding the Syrian stand to this end, noting that such strikes will convert the terrorism- fighting campaign into a new direction and will help to providing an appropriate atmosphere for calming down. The Syrian source explained that the international efforts aiming at resuming the peace process need in the first place halting the escalation by the Israeli side or the possibilities of striking Iraq, adding that such matter will re-mix the cards in the region and will push the Arab policy into a new direction that is not in line with the current international peace efforts.

The Syrian source indicated that the international community does not have a consensus towards any military action against Iraq, adding that the Arab states, in general, reject such an attack and that the secretary general of the Arab League said that any military strike against Iraq will result in a friction between the Arab group and the US.

The Syrian source said that the American warning signals to Baghdad imply inclination to re-margin the Palestinian question and the Arab Israeli conflict. A matter which means that the American proposals towards peace are not different from previous attempts in imposing a certain security situation instead of a political solution.
