King Mohammed performs friday prayers in Smara
Morocco, Religion, 11/30/2001
Morocco's King Mohammed VI, Commander of the faithful, performed this Friday's prayers at the Hassan I Mosque in Smara, southern Morocco. The king was accompanied by his brother Prince Moulay Rachid and his cousin Prince Moulay Ismail.
Commenting Friday's visit to Smara, Assahra Al-Maghribya (pro-governmental) daily said the visit has a spiritual and political dimension. Spiritually, the visit is an opportunity for the Smara inhabitants to renew the sermon of allegiance to King Mohammed VI. Politically, the visit affirms Morocco's attachment to its territorial integrity and resolve not to cede an inch of its territory, the daily said.
King Mohammed VI had visited earlier this month two other Moroccan southern cities, Dakhla and Laayoune, part of a tour in several central and sourthern provinces of the kingdom. The king was planning to visit Smara after Laayoune but the visit was postponed due to adverse weather conditions. During the tour, the sovereign had launched or dedicated several social and economic development projects.
