Sudanese reservation on an American proposal
Sudan-USA, Politics, 11/30/2001
Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir has announced he had informed the US delegate for peace in Sudan John Danforth " al-Khartoum's reservations" towards his proposal to a partial cease- fire in al-Nouba mountains.
The Sudanese TV and radio said that al-Bashir told the US envoy that the cease- fire should include, in addition to al-Nouba mountains, the oil extraction area in al-Wahda province in the southern part of the country.
In the mid of November, the American envoy made his first visits to Sudan where the rebellions have been fighting since 1983 in order to attain self- determination in southern Sudan in confrontation of the successive Sudanese governments.
The Sudanese President stressed that the air bombardment operation carried out by the Sudanese army in the " military operations area" will not be halted," stressing that these bombardment operations do not target civilians.
The Sudanese President continued:' should ( in the past) civilian and humanitarian aids areas were hit, these were made mistakenly rather than as a result of a deliberate policy." However, the Sudanese President announced that his government supports the establishment of " Calm zones."
