US supports Egypt's role in peace process, combating terrorism

US Vice President Dick Cheney asserted yesterday that his country supports cooperation with Egypt taking into consideration its key role in the Middle East peace process, or its struggle to keep regional stability and combat terrorism.

Cheney met at the White House yesterday with a delegation of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt led by Mohammad Mansour, President of the Chamber.

Mansour described the meeting as very positive, pointing out that the delegation had stressed the importance of Egypt's strong presence as a main condition to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East.

The delegation offered condolences on the death of victims of the terrorist incidents in the United States.

Mansour said that the delegation would confirm to members of the American administration, the congress and the World Bank Egypt's condemnation of all acts of terrorism, especially after Egypt's suffering of it for many years.

"The delegation members will clarify the negative impacts of the terrorist attacks on the Egyptian economy, especially in tourism and aviation domains which witnessed noticeable plummet, in addition to the decrease in the revenues of the Suez Canal and the increase of the insurance fees, which affected the exports, "said Mansour.

Mansour added that a series of meetings would be held by the chamber delegation on the Egyptian -American cooperation to activate the Egyptian economy to surpass the current crisis.

He stressed the importance of working to liberalize trade systems between Egypt and the united states, sign trade agreements between the two countries and put the agreements in force as soon as possible to accelerate the economic reform process and restore trust in the importance role of the private sector.

Mansour underscored the importance of increasing the volume of trade chances available for the American companies working in Egypt to create opportunities for investments and attract more foreign investors, especially the Americans.

The American Chamber of Commerce delegation which started a visit to the United States on Sunday met with Senator Ted Stevens, Head of the Senate Appropriation Committee, Allan Larson, Under-Secretary of the State Department for Economic Affairs and Peter Rodman, Assistant Secretary of Defence.

The delegation also met with a number of officials at political, economic and research centers, including Martin Indyk, Edward Walker and James Zogby.
