Libya-Egypt, Politics, 11/26/2001
The summit which was held between President Hosni Mubarak and Libyan counterpart Muammar Gaddafi came within the context of regular meetings between the two Arab leaders to discuss regional and international development, Egypt's Ambassador to Libya Hani Khalaf said Monday.
In an interview with Cairo Radio he said that one of the main topics discussed is the current international anti-terrorism campaign.
'They also discussed development in the occupied Palestinian lands,' he said.
He added that Mubarak-Gaddafi dealt with joint Arab action and the future of the African Union.
"Leader of the revolution Col. Muammar Gaddafi and President Hosni Mubarak held a one-hour one-on-one meeting before they were joined by members of the two delegations," said Egyptian Information Minister Safwat El-Sherif.
'The two leaders see eye to eye with regard to the latest international developments and the war in Afghanistan,' he said.
"They underlined the need for a unified Arab vision with respect to combating terrorism and tracking down terrorists especially that both Egypt and Libya had suffered from terrorist operations," Sherif said.
Speaking to MENA, the Minister said Mubarak and Gaddafi discussed the outcome of contacts made between Mubarak and US President George W. Bush and European leaders to end the Israeli aggressions on the Palestinian people.
Sherif said that the Egyptian and Libyan health ministers met on the sidelines of the Mubarak-Gaddafi summit.
"The ministers agreed on organizing an Egyptian medical exhibition in January 2002 in Tripoli and Benghazi," he added.
"They also agreed to employ 850 Egyptian doctors at Libyan hospitals," said Sherif.
"The ministers approved an exchange program between Tripoli hospital and Egypt's Nasser Institute," he added.
"The oil ministers also agreed to give the go-ahead for the activities of the company responsible for extending a gas pipeline between the two countries as of next month," said Sherif.
