Egypt calls on international community to help remove 23 million mines

Assistant Foreign Minister Ambassador Mahmoud Mubarak delivered a speech early Friday before the 56th session of the United Nations General Assembly "UNGA" on the measures concerned with demining.
He pointed out that Egypt has 23 million land mines planted on the area of more than 280,000 acres.
He added that this is considered a big obstacle hindering the development of the areas, most of which are in Al-Alamin.
The ambassador pointed out that Egypt cooperated with UN which dispatched a mission to assess the problem and issued a statement including suggestions to deal with mines.
Moreover, Ambassador Mahmoud Mubarak remarked that Egypt considered the UN Secretary General's report on extending assistance to the countries suffering from mines.
However, Egypt was not put as one of the most countries that suffered from this problem.
He stressed that an accurate strategy should be drawn up the meet the needs of member states harmed by the mines problem.
