Diplomat praises Mubarak's efforts on Palestinian cause
Egypt-Palestine, Politics, 11/24/2001

Ambassador Hassan Abdel-Rahman, Representative of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in Washington, hailed the efforts exerted by President Hosni Mubarak to reach a just solution for the Palestinian cause.

In an interview with the Sawt Al-Arab Radio over the phone from Washington, Abdel-Rahman considered that the recent stands adopted by the United States and the statements contained in US Secretary of State Colin Powell's speech as positive for the solution of the Palestinian issue.

He said that he had contacts with the two US envoys expected in the region mid next week and was briefed by them on the US plan of action for the days and weeks to come.

"The objective in the near future is to reach a cease-fire and Israeli forces withdrawal from the posts they occupied, end the siege and embark on serious negotiations to get a just and overall solution," he said.

Abdel-Rahman expressed belief that the Americans are not satisfied with the stands and conduct of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Mubarak's confidence honour for Egyptian women newly appointed minister

Newly-appointed Minister Fayza Abul-Naga, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, expressed appreciation of President Hosni Mubarak's confidence by choosing her for the new prestigious post.

"There is nothing more honourable than to serve Egypt and its national objectives," she said, adding this valuable trust on the part of the President is an honouring for the role of Egyptian women in all fields.

On her future agenda as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Abul-Naga said she was still gathering information but in general she would help Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher in pushing forward international cooperation and creating the necessary coordination.

Abul-Naga noted that her work in the international organizations in New York and Geneva added much to her experience, noting she was lucky to have begun her service in the foreign ministry as a member of Egypt's Permanent Delegate to the UN.

She referred to her work as political advisor for Boutros Ghali when he was serving as United Nations (UN) Secretary-General for five years considered one of the most important periods in the history of the international organization.

On the nuclear question and rendering the Mideast region free from weapons of mass destruction, Abul-Naga said that Egypt would chair-two month-disarmament conference due to be held by January.

She added that the action of the conference would focus on disarming the nuclear weapons and eradicating the weapons of mass destruction.
