Morocco, Politics, 11/24/2001

Morocco's King Mohammed VI, Commander of the Faithful, chaired on Friday a working session to assess the progress of the works of the advisory commission in charge of the revision of the personal status code.

Driss Dahak, President of the commission, said at the meeting that the commission heard all parties concerned by the family issues, that is more than 70 associations.

Sub-commissions were created to study all the documentation related to national legislation and to scientific studies in family-related realms, he said, adding that the commission also contacted experts to have their opinions on the issue.

Dahak submitted to the king proposals by the commission related to the effective materialization of certain provisions of the personal status code.

The six sub-commissions stemming from the Commission are currently studying the major themes of the reform of the personal status code, including the marriage contract and its effects, the dissolution of marriage, legal capacity and representation, the Will and Succession.

The king gave instructions for the materialization of the first part related to the sound implementation of the provisions of the personal status code, especially the creation of unified sections of Family Justice that should be endowed with the necessary human and material resources as well as back up mechanisms likely to ensure celerity in pronouncing and executing rulings.

The king urged the Commission members to double efforts to come up with the reform of the code.

The session was attended by justice minister, Omar Azzimane, habous (endowments) and Islamic affairs minister, Abdelkebir Alaoui Mdaghri, the king's advisors, Mohamed Moatassim, Ms. Zoulikha Nasri and Abbas El Jirari, head of the King's office, Mohamed Rochdi Chraibi, and Mohamed Kettani, charg? de mission at the Royal Cabinet.
