Mubarak-Abdullah talks highlighted importance of Arab solidarity
Saudi Arabia-Egypt, Politics, 11/22/2001

"President Mubarak and Crown Prince Abdullah Ben Abdul Aziz Wednesday evening exchanged views over a joint Arab vision and closing Arab ranks to face up to the current challenges,"said an Egyptian official in a briefing to the media.

According to Egyptian Information Minister Safwat EL Sherif, Mubarak and Abdullah reviewed the current international conditions and their impact on the Arab and Islamic worlds, highlighting their firm stance in confronting terrorism.

"They asserted that the struggle of the Palestinian people has been in self-defence in the face of the Israeli aggression and for restoring their legitimate rights and usurped lands," added EL Sherif, who accompanied the Egyptian leader on his brief visit to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday.

"Talks also assessed the outcome of contacts of Egypt and Saudi Arabia with the United States and other countries to bring an end to Israel's bloody attacks against Palestinians in occupied territories," he said.

He pointed out that they agreed to continue these efforts to stop deterioration in the occupied territories and welcomed the US backing to Palestinians' right to set up their independent state and work for establishing peace and security between Israel and Palestinians.

Mubarak-Abdullah talks also tackled coordination in face of attempts to distort divine religions and instigate a clash between the Islamic civilization and other cultures.

In its report on the visit, AL Ahram records the following:

- Mubarak's visit, though it was a flight one, yet it came in the framework of the close and fraternal relations between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, on one side and between President Mubarak and both King Fahd and Prince Abdullah on the other.

- The visit comes amidst regional and international developments the most important of which is the declaration by the US administration of its new vision of the peace process and developments of war in Afghanistan.

- Political leaderships in Egypt and Saudi Arabia are keen to sustain coordination with the aim of reaching an Arab agreement on regional and international issues.

- Bilateral relations were given special emphasis by the Egyptian-Saudi summit as both countries intend to establish a free trade zone with the aim of increasing trade exchange and number of Saudi investment projects in Egypt which have so far reached 490.
