The EU Troika delegation and the Hizbullah
Regional-European Union, Politics, 11/21/2001

The Monte Carlo radio correspondent in Damascus said on Tuesday that the European Troika delegation asked the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to control Hizbullah party in seeking to enhance calm on the Lebanese- Israeli borders in preparations to launch the peace process.

The correspondent quoted the Belgian prime minister as saying following the delegation's meeting with President al-Assad on Monday:" we have asked President al-Assad to use his influence in order to achieve calm on the Syrian- Lebanese borders during the coming months which will be decisive in regard to peace." She added that the Troika delegation seemed optimistic towards the possibility of re-launching the Israeli- Palestinian negotiations, despite the fact that he ( the Belgian prime minister) did not explain the reason behind this optimism, except what he mentioned about the reduction of violence during the past days and the common American- European view point on the need of founding the Palestinian state.
