Al-Assad gets messages from French, Cypriot counterparts

Syrian President Bashar al-Aassad received at the Damascus al-Shaab palace on Monday the director of the Middle East and North Africa department at the French foreign ministry and members of the accompanying delegation France Ambassador in Damascus attended the meeting.

The President got a message from the French President Jacques Chirac pertaining to co-operation between the two countries and the efforts exerted to fight terrorism.

Discussions dealt with the troubled situation in the occupied Palestinian territories and its negative reflections on the peace process and to the total conditions in the region as well as the question of peace at the Lebanese- Israeli borders.

Discussions also dealt with regional and international efforts exerted to fight terrorism and reasons behind it.

The President expressed satisfaction over the conditions of Syrian- French relations and their development in scientific, cultural and technical fields.

He added that Syria has always welcomed an active European role in the region and called for an effective French role in this process, due to France's role and weight in Europe and the World, stressing Syria's commitment to just and comprehensive peace according to UN security council resolutions and the Madrid terms of reference.

The President also received at the Damascus al-Shaab palace on Monday the honorary President of the Cypriot Socialist party Dr. Vassos Lyssarides. The meeting was attended by the Cypriot ambassador in Damascus.

Lyssarides conveyed a message from the Cypriot president Klavkos Klerides to President al-Assad on bilateral relations between Syria and Cyprus.

Discussions during the meeting dealt with conditions in the region and the world. Stress was laid on the need of finding out a formula to maintain better co-operation relations between the European states and Europe and the need to have a united position by the developing states during this historical phase of time in order to settle all pending issues.
