Presidential decree on new economic structure
Egypt, Economics, 11/17/2001

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is expected to issue a decree within the coming hours on the new government's economic structure and the economic ministerial group.

According to the decree, the economy ministry portfolio will be abolished and replaced with a foreign trade portfolio due to supervise Exports & Imports Control Organization, Trade Representation Agency, the Capital Market Authority, the Stock Exchanges in Cairo and Alexandria, Exports Development Bank and Exports Support Fund.

Insurance and re-insurance companies will be affiliated to the Ministry of Planning.

The Central Bank of Egypt will come under the supervision of the Prime Minister.

Atef Ebeid said all these changes aim at pushing the country's exports forward and curbing its imports in a way that do not affect the socio-economic development process.

Ebeid will preside Tuesday over a Cabinet meeting on timetables to implement President Hosni Mubarak's directives set forth in his address of the new parliamentary session.

The cabinet will also discuss the new priorities of the economic performance in view of the current world developments.

A Cabinet official said Friday that the ministerial meeting will also address ways to upgrade the economic performance, increasing the state foreign currency resources, boosting exports and opening new markets to Egyptian products.
