Syria and the WTO
Syria, Economics, 11/17/2001

Syria is preparing to follow up its application to joint the World Trade Organization. This is after elimination of previous objections on this measure which is approved by the Syrian leadership in what is considered a " victory" for the Syrian ministry of economy and foreign trade following a " battle" lasted for 10 years with ideologies of different opinions of others.

Following economic and political controversy that lasted for 50 years since Syria's withdrawal from the WTO in the beginning of the 1950 s when Israel joined this organization, Damascus had agreed to join the WTO as a Statute member after a memorandum by the Syrian ministry of the economy and foreign trade of 20 items said that joining WTO will not prevent the possibility of continued Arab boycott of Israel.

The items of the memorandum are not limited to the economic field, rather dealt with the political area.

However, western sources in Damascus considered the Syrian decision to join WTO as positive despite the fact that it came late, but also, on the other hand, stressed that there is a need for a revolution in the decree and decisions to change the current economic conditions, considering that the coming Syrian government, expected since almost one year will be an indicator to be adopted and assessed by the west to measure the extent of the change and its seriousness.
