Morocco will Spare no Effort to Settle Artificial Sahara Conflict, FM
Morocco, Politics, 11/16/2001
Morocco on Wednesday renewed readiness and full commitment to spare no effort to put an end to the "artificial conflict" of the Sahara which is an obstacle to the edification of the Arab Maghreb and the African Unity.
The statement was made by Moroccan foreign affairs and cooperation minister, Mohamed Benaissa, at the ministerial meeting of the coordination bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, held in New York on the sidelines of the ongoing UN general assembly.
Benaissa voiced Morocco's readiness to start negotiations with the other parties concerned in accordance with the recommendations of the United Nations Security Council and the draft framework agreement proposed by James Baker, Special envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara.
The obstacles to the implementation of the settlement plan are in reality cited by certain milieus to overshadow the conclusions reached by the U.N Secretary-General in his latest three reports, clearly underlining the impossibility to implement the settlement plan, said Benaissa.
Morocco is confident in the legality of its positions and their adequacy with the moves taken to find a definitive political solution to this issue, he said, adding Morocco hopes that the other parties will meet the call made in this connection by the Secretary-General and his special envoy.
