A spanish socialist leader urges Madrid to choose between a stable Morocco and a belligerent Polisario
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 11/15/2001
Chairman of the Canary Socialist Party and senator of the autonomous community of the Canary islands, Jeronimo Saavedra, urged the Spanish central government to clarify once and for all its stand on the Sahara issue.
The Socialist leader called the Spanish government to clearly state whether it wants to coexist, 100 KM from the Canary Islands, with a stable Moroccan government or with a belligerent entity as the one upheld by the polisario.
He condemned the mock referendum on the Sahara that was recently held in Andalusia, describing it as a provocation towards Morocco and recalling that the president of the autonomous government of Andalusia had called the mock referendum an error.
The holding of this mock referendum was among the reasons behind the deterioration of relations between Morocco and Spain and having prompted Rabat to call back its ambassador to Madrid for consultation.
