King Mohammed congratulates Moroccan diplomat for election chairwoman of UNESCO executive committee
Morocco, People, 11/15/2001
Morocco's King Mohammed VI received Wednesday at the royal office in Rabat, Morocco's delegate to the UNESCO, Ambassador Aziza Bennani, who has just been elected chairwoman of the executive council of the international organization.
Since 1964, when the late Moroccan Mohamed El Fassi had held the position, no delegate of the African continent nor the Arab world was ever elected to chair the executive council which is one of the three governing bodies of the UN educational, scientific and cultural organization.
Ms Bennani who has been unanimously elected to the post for a two year term is the first Arab and African woman to access the chairmanship of the UNESCO executive council.
King Mohammed VI congratulated Ms Bennani for this exceptional testimony of trust on the part of the international community and which has a special significance in these times of uncertainty and confusion.
Director of the royal office, Mohamed Rochdi Chraibi, attended the audience.
