Morocco's fm meets world leaders in New York
Morocco, Politics, 11/12/2001

Moroccan minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Mohamed Benaissa, who is taking part in the United Nations general assembly proceedings, held on Saturday a series of talks with several world leaders present in New York.

Benaissa met the presidents of Pakistan, South Africa, Peru and Venezuela, respectively Pervez Musharraf, Thabo Mbeki, Alejandro Toledo and Hugo Chavez as well as the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

The Pakistani president asked the head of Moroccan diplomacy to convey his thanks and gratitude to King Mohammed VI for the solidarity expressed with the government and people of Pakistan and for the aid extended by Morocco to contribute to Islamabad's efforts to face the flow of Afghan refugees.

Last October, Morocco sent an emergency humanitarian assistance to the Afghan populations displaced in Pakistan and border areas, following the recent developments and the launching of US-British actions in Afghanistan. Morocco sent food products, medicine and blankets.

The meeting with the South African president surveyed African issues and ongoing initiatives to help Africa fight poverty, diseases and conflicts, in addition to means to promote regional stability and cooperation.

Moroccan-Peruvian relations were at the center of Benaissa's meeting with the Peruvian President. Both sides stressed the need to institute periodical consultations between the two countries.

Talks between the Moroccan foreign minister and the Emir of Qatar covered the situation in the Arab-Islamic world following last September 11 attacks against the USA and the need to resume dialogue in the Middle East to establish a fair and lasting peace and put an end of Israeli abuses and provocations against the Palestinian people, in conformity with the international legality.

The Venezuelan president expressed esteem and admiration to King Mohammed VI and wish to consolidate further the relations of dialogue and trust between the two countries. He also said he wished to visit Morocco.
