UNESCO: Alexandria, the book capital for 2002
Egypt, Culture, 11/10/2001
The UNESCO has unanimously ratified the proposal presented by the international publishers union and the international libraries union to have Alexandria the "book capital" worldwide in the year 2002.
The head of the international publishers union said that it has been agreed to move the torch from Madrid, the 2001 capital to Alexandria late this month in a celebration to be transmitted across the satellites, attended by a number of venerable characters.
The UINESCO will give full support for this project regarding the historic significance of the book as the road to knowledge and means to preserve the human heritage.
