Mubarak addresses People's Assembly and Shura Council

President Mubarak today gave a major political speech at the joint session of the People's Assembly and the Shura Council on the occasion of the beginning of the new parliamentary session.

In his speech the President dealt with the current international developments, national action issues in the political, economic and social domains in the upcoming stage.

The President explained the economic situation in Egypt in the light of September 11 incidents and gave the government specific assignments to mitigate the effects of those incidents on the Egyptian market especially in the political, aviation fields and other sectors.

The President called on the government to rearrange its priorities in terms of the development plan. The President called for emphasis on projects with quick return in order to improve living standards and facilitate the services extended to citizens.

The President spoke about the importance of developing banking system to cope with regional and international changes as this can help reactivate the market, investment process and national saving.

Furthermore, the President explained the Egyptian attitude towards the Palestinian issue, the Mideast peace process, ways of halting violence, and confronting terrorism.

The President also explained Egypt's policy and efforts for uprooting terrorism and eliminating its financing resources.

Prime Minister Dr. Atef Ebeid has underlined the government keenness to consult the members of parliament, majority and opposition, on all legislations which are due to be launched before parliament in the new parliamentary session.

The Prime Minister said priority would be given to the projects which aim at facilitating services extended to citizens, improving economic performance and maintaining the achievements accomplished during the past twenty years.
