"The agreement signed between UNICEF and SOS is very important in the way that the two organizations are working within the framework of the Child Right Convention," said UNICEF ' s representative in Damascus Mohamed Bendriss Alami in a statement to ArabicNews on the occasion of an agreement signed between UNICEF and the SOS to establish a Children club in Qidseya, Damascus countryside.
He continued that it is very important for UNICEF to strengthen its relationship with other organizations working in the children area.
He added that for UNICEF children are under the responsibility of all parents, society, governments, international organizations, international governments and considering that the challenges are money is very important to develop international organizations co-operation and collaboration.
He explained that this is why UNICEF supported financially SOS to create a club for children. He added that this club will be used by children from the SOS village in Damascus as well as by other children live in the same area.
Mr. Alami indicated that this new experience will create good integration of SOS children within the social environment.
The agreement created for this purpose was signed by the SOS chairperson Mrs. Salma al-Laham and Mr. Alami. It states that UNICEF provides several items including greeting cards, gifts, T shirts and dishes.. etc. for free to the SOS at a value of USD 11229 and, in return, the SOS undertakes to sell these items within a period of time not to exceed two months from signing this agreement. Revenues of selling these items are to be used in providing the said club with needed facilities.
The cost to build the club, estimated at 350,000 Syrian pounds is to be covered by the SOS while a sum of 516, 570 Syrian pounds provided by UNICEF's donation will be used to provide the facilities.
The project's target group is children aging between 5-14 year old and the aim is to refine Children's talents, giving them the opportunity for self- expression and free debate, improving their intellectual and physical skills and filling their leisure times by exercising favorite hobbies and new experiences.
On this occasion Mr. Alami and Mrs al-Lahma exchanged two friendly speeches in which they expressed their happiness over signing this agreement. They hope this activity will mark the beginning of other agreements that would open the door wide for further care and support rendered to Syrian children.
However, the Club which can serve 150 children simultaneously will be officially inaugurated in January 2002.
