Eritrea and the European Union
Eritrea-European Union, Politics, 11/10/2001
Five European ambassadors on Friday returned back to Eritrea after two months from summoning them as a result of differences concerning toughened Eritrean measures against reformers and the mass media in the country. One diplomat told reporters that all diplomats from Germany, Holland, Denmark, and the European Commission returned back with the exception of the Italian ambassador.
In September, Eritrea expelled the Italian ambassador in Asmara as he led a European protest against arresting 11 reformers and closing of the free press. That Eritrean measures pushed the countries of the European Union to summon on its diplomats in order to make consultations.
