Syria and the World Trade Organization
Syria, Economics, 11/10/2001
The London- based " foreign report" bulletin issued on Friday said that stemmed from President Bashar's al-Assad determination to re-merge his country in the world's economy following decades of isolation, Syria, thereby, is moving towards joining the world trade organization..
The bulletin added that in preparation for that the ruling Syrian Baath party asked the Syrian ministry of the economy and foreign trade to prepare a technical study about this matter.
The bulletin added that Syria was one of the Statute states of the General Agreement on Tariff and trade GATT which used to exist before the world trade organization in 1947 but it withdrew in 1951 in protest of Israel's membership in it.
The Bulletin continued that Syria's joining of the WTO will not be as a " cake " for Damascus because if so Syria has to bear an internal economic revolution of unknown results.
