Winners of the Agha Khan Architecture Prize

The Agha Khan Architecture Prize for 2001 was awarded to associations from Morocco, Iran, India and Guinea.
The Moroccan Ait Itikel association was rewarded for the social-economic projects it carried out in Ait Itikel, in the High Atlas, mainly in matters of electrification and water supply, and in helping break the isolation of the locality.
The chairman of this rural community was also awarded a recognition certificate.
The Chairman's prize went to Gioveri Bao from Sri Lanka for his outstanding rehabilitation works of Islamic monuments in several Asian countries.
The awarding ceremony was held last Tuesday in the citadel of Aleppo, 355 KM north of Damascus.
The Agha Khan Architecture Prize, worth US$ 500,000, is awarded every three years to best architectural projects, low-cost housing projects and rehabilitation of historical sites.
The Agha Khan cultural foundation, set up in 1988, financed the refurbishing of three historical citadels in Syria, namely the Aleppo citadel, the Salah Eddine citadel and the Messiaf citadel.
