Moroccan university hosts international workshop on digital libraries
Morocco, Education, 11/9/2001
Alakhawayn university in the Atlas mountains resort of Ifrane, and the European Network of excellence on Digital Libraries are holding here an international workshop of digital libraries, which opened Thursday.
The university, the only private English-speaking university in Morocco, explains on its website "Todya, digital libraries have been identified as a national challenge in many countries and as an area with wide repercussions on the well-being of citizens. Ambitious programs have been launched with the aim of producing dramatic advances in areas that may impact the rapid development of Digital Libraries."
Alakhawayn University says it is the pioneer in the field in Morocco, as its library is moving towards digitizing all the documents that it holds and making them accessible to the world. The library intends to design and build a modern and efficient digital library, based on the latest technologies.
The workshop aims at bringing together Digital Libraries' researchers from both sides of the Mediterranean to present and discuss their experiences and best practices in designing, implementing, and maintaining DLs with respect to modern technological and economic environment. The main objective of the workshop is to facilitate an exchange of experiences among researchers involved in technologies of interest to Digital Libraries, to explore and discuss subjects of common interest for possible international cooperation, and to allow the AUI library to learn from other practical experiences and to have a good and clear idea on how to monitor the design and the implementation of its own digital library.
