Terrorism is the main issue for Arab ministers of justice
Regional, Politics, 11/9/2001

The issue of fighting terrorism and the need of making a distinction between terrorism and the right of people to resist occupation was the main issue in the meetings of the Arab ministers of justice which were held under the chairmanship of the Iraqi minister of justice Munzir al-Shawi and the participation of some 15 Arab ministers of justice and the chairman of the legal department at the Arab League.

In conclusion of the meetings of its 17th session held in Cairo on Wednesday, the council of the Arab ministers of justice stressed the need of making a distinction between terrorism and the legitimate rights of peoples to resisting occupation, including the legitimate struggle of the Palestinian people against the state- terrorism conducted by Israel.

The council stressed total backing to convening an international conference to discuss the reasons behind terrorism and means of eliminating it, in the framework of the UN.

The council also indicated the importance of coordinating Arab stances towards the draft UN agreement to fighting organized terrorism across national borders, the draft comprehensive agreement concerning international terrorism and the international agreement project to prevent nuclear terrorism operations and other international resolutions concerned.

The council also underlined the importance of inter- Arab coordination concerning the Statute of the International Criminal Court. It was decided to convene an Arab legal seminar in Cairo in April 2002 on the impact of ratifying and joining the Statute of the International criminal court on the Arab states's legal obligations and legislation.
