Several regrettable events behind Morocco's decision to call ambassador to Spain for consultation, official source
Morocco-Spain, Politics, 11/8/2001

The Moroccan ministry of foreign affairs and cooperation rejected on Wednesday "misplaced assertions and ill-willed insinuations" that an anti-Spanish lobby was behind Morocco's decision to call its ambassador to Spain for consultation.

The department said in a statement sent to MAP that Morocco decided to call its ambassador in Spain for consultation is the result of the accumulation of several regrettable events that were already explained in due time by the Moroccan government and notified to the Spanish authorities.

The ministry also regrets Spanish attitudes which tend to overshadow the multiple "real and significant" problems which accumulated over the last months and deplores allegations by some circles in Spain that those responsible for difficulties are in Morocco instead of wondering objectively on causes of the present divergence.

The statement further denies allegations by several Spanish officials and media that an anti-Spain lobby in Morocco is responsible for the decision to call back the Moroccan diplomat for consultation and that the decision was not made by the government and surprised several Moroccan top officials.

The decision is actually the result of the accumulation of several regrettable events, says the official statement which explains that if the argument of lobbies is to be put forward to explain the present state of bilateral relations, it is rather on the Spanish side that such lobbies exist, act and develop, for various reasons.

It is not in Morocco where particularly hostile campaigns to a neighboring country and offending to its citizens are waged. It is not in Morocco where under the cover of democratic practices and prerogatives of the region that referendum masquerades are held on issues that are vital to Spain and the Spaniards. It is not in Morocco that public discourses of threats and pressures are held and that condescending attitudes and comments worthy of the past are developed, the statement deplores.

Morocco, with all its political trends and various active components, has never taken an action that could harm Spain, jeopardize its interests and institution or adversely affect relations between the two neighboring countries, the foreign ministry goes on.

The statement concludes that Morocco regrets the overshadowing by Spanish authorities of the multiple, real and significant problems accumulated over the recent months and deplores that some pretend that anti-Spanish lobbies in Morocco instead of wondering objectively on causes of the present divergence.
