On Brussels' conference
Regional, Politics, 11/8/2001

A prominent source took part in the meetings of the foreign ministers of the Euro-Mediterranean states which concluded its works on Tuesday in Brussels said it had become the conference to support the coalition against terrorism.

In its Wednesday's issue, the Lebanese daily al-Nahar quoted the same source as saying that confirmed information prevailed Brussels's atmospheres that a certain declaration will be announced on the establishment of the Palestinian state to be issued in New York and the US, who was behind that will avail this opportunity to materialize what was announced by President George Bush and to raise the Arab support for this position and this will be for ignoring the intensified American attacks against Afghanistan.

The source indicated that the conferees were confined to note world condemnation of the incidents of September 11, support for the UN security council resolution 1373. However, the conferees did not take into account the Arab and Islamic position on the need of defining terrorism which was not stated in the UN security council resolutions no. 1373 of September 28.

The source also indicated that the conference could not reach a decision calling on Israel to withdraw from the Arab territories into which it incurred and confined to express their deep concern over the conditions which have become of great danger in violating regional stability.

The source said that the conference's final statement did not take into account all of the Three Lebanese notes on making a distinction between the peace process as a whole and peace negotiations with the Palestinians, but took into account the Lebanese demand regarding the question of the refugees and the following phrase was added:" Searching for peace should include all items especially a just solution for the question of the refugees. " On the other hand, al-Nahar indicated, quoting the EU commissioner for foreign relations Chris Patten that at least before the end of the current year ( 2001 ) a draft Partnership agreement between the EU and Lebanon will be signed and that impediments between the two sides are under treatment and minor.
