King Mohammed renews attachment to international legality to settle (sahara) artificial conflict
Morocco, Politics, 11/7/2001
Morocco's King Mohammed VI has renewed Morocco's adherence to the principles of dialogue, moderation, peace and neighborliness and to the arbitration of international legality to definitively put an end to the artificial conflict fabricated around the legitimate recovery of its southern provinces.
"We have opted for adherence to the principles of dialogue, moderation, peace and neighborliness and to the arbitration of international legality as the best way to definitively put an end to the artificial conflict fabricated around the legitimate recovery of our southern provinces," said King Mohammed VI in a speech he delivered Tuesday evening on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the Green March.
The sovereign went on that "Morocco has shown good will and demonstrated a clear and firm political resoluteness to cooperate with the international community in overcoming the deadlock, which has made the United Nations settlement plan inapplicable, due to artificial obstacles erected by the enemies of our territorial integrity."
Morocco has positively responded to the draft framework agreement, that was backed and encouraged by the international community, and that was proposed, in all responsibility, by James Baker, special envoy of the United Nations Secretary General, "offering thus a genuine chance to reach, within international legitimacy, a final political solution regarding the Moroccan identity of our Sahara," King Mohammed VI pointed out.
He went on that Morocco, which will never give up a single iota with regard to its territorial integrity, "has accepted this political solution as long as it guarantees the total respect of our national sovereignty and our territorial integrity, is in tune with the characteristics of our advanced regional decentralized system and falls in the frame of the respect of the principles of democracy."
He expressed hope that "all the concerned parties show a positive spirit towards this path that has enjoyed international unanimity and that will hopefully enable to put an end to this artificial conflict."
This will also make it possible to create an atmosphere of cooperation, complementarity and serenity in the Arab Maghreb region, which needs to harness its common resources and potentials, to take up the challenges thrown at the region and to build a better, safer future for the mounting generations, the monarch said, stressing that "whatever the developments of the dossier on the final settlement of the artificial conflict about the Moroccanity of our Sahara are, Morocco, which is firmly attached to its presence on its territory, which is sure of its sovereignty on this territory, will resolutely carry on its march to secure a global development to its Saharan provinces."
