Arabs do not hate US but have reservations on its stances
Regional-USA, Politics, 11/5/2001
Egyptian Ambassador in Washington Nabil Fahmy Sunday said that the Arabs do not hate the United States. Rather they have some reservations on its stances towards the Middle East issues.
Fahmy, in his speech at a working breakfast with members of the Central American Businessman Society in Chicago, added that the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands and other repressive measures do not only affect the image of Israel but also that of the US.
"Maintaining this policy is harming the US interests in the region, especially in light of the failure to take strong and clear stances towards the Israeli practices," he pointed out.
He described statements by President George Bush in supporting the establishment of the state of Palestine as a positive step that should be followed by other tangible measures that bring back the parties concerned to the negotiations table.
Fahmy reviewed the economic repercussions of the September 11 terror attacks on the world and the Middle East and on Egypt in particular.
He noted that the linkage of the international community's interests led to expanding the negative impact of the bloody events.
At another meeting organised by the US Foreign Affairs Council, Fahmy said that Egypt had a decisive stance against terrorism. "Ending terrorism requires polling all efforts together and cooperation by the international community with its various security, judicial and economic institutions," Fahmy said.
"The settlement of critical international questions like the Middle East peace process would help rally the people's of the region against the anti-terrorism efforts," he added.
