Egypt participates in Barcelona process meetings
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 11/5/2001
Egypt will take part in the two-day Barcelona process foreign ministers meetings, to kick off in Brussels on Monday.
"Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher will lead his country's delegation to the meetings that would be held at a time regional and international upheavals have been taking place," said Assistant Foreign Minister Mohammed Shaaban.
"Terrorism and the Middle East would be atop of the issues to be addressed by the foreign ministers," said Shaaban.
He added that the two sides of the Mediterranean would stress the importance of activating the Barcelona declaration.
"Though the Middle East peace process is not part of the Barcelona process, it is still relevant to the area. Peace and security along the Mediterranean dictate the necessity to prevent any wars or conflicts", he added.
Shaaban concluded that the ongoing international efforts on terrorism-combat and the Middle East peace process would figure high on the agenda of the meetings.
On the other hand, the 56th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which will convene in New York on November 10-16 will discuss 185 items covering all the political, economic, legal, social and environmental issues.
Before leaving to New York, director of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry's UN Affairs Department Ahmed Darwish said the UNGA would discuss the situation in the Palestinian lands, offering assistance to the Palestinians in addition to other political, economic, and social and environmental issues.
He added that the UNGAsession would also discuss the UN budget for 2002 and 2003 and financing the peacekeeping operations.
Ahmed Maher will lead Egypt's delegation to the UNGA towards the current regional and international issues.
