Government pledged to confront joblessness
Egypt, Economics, 11/5/2001

Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid said the government prepares and enforces clear-cut programmes to end the joblessness.

Ebeid said that the government is committed to several principles to confront the problem of unemployment.

These principles include planning to provide 800,000 job opportunities annually for youth and graduates, to encourage youth to work outside the government in the private sector or self-employment, to expand training centers to prepare graduates to enter the labor market which calls for high skills, and to encourage small economic entities which provide services to youth projects.

Addressing a press conference Sunday on the occasion of the graduation of a new batch from the technical institute of advance industries affiliated to the ministry of military production, Ebeid said that the government has given support to the private sector to absorb more job opportunities because real needs for employees in the government sector are limited to expansion in health, educational and social services related to family planning.

"These expansions need a number of new graduates. The number of those employed by the government at present is as large as(5,750,000) and, consequently, youth should seek employment outside the government sector " Ebeid said.

Ebeid called on youth to develop their skills and receive advanced training in order to enter the labor market in Egypt which calls for special levels of experience in the age of banking and technological development.

Ebeid pledged to expand training centers in the various governorates in order to rehabilitate graduates to acquire new skills in addition to university degrees.

Ebeid said that there are training centers affiliated to 20 ministries that provide 450,000 training opportunities annually at a cost of 400 million pounds.
