New Party Born, Splinter of MNP
Morocco, Politics, 11/5/2001
A new party called the Democratic Union was born on Saturday in Rabat at the end of its constituent congress held by dissidents from the National Popular Movement (MNP/chaired by Mahjoubi Aherdane).
Member of the constituent commission, Mohamed Ababouch, said the "new party was created as an automatic result of the will expressed by several militants" with a view to promoting progress and democratization of political parties' management and so that parties become a genuine instrument in supervising citizens.
After he stressed the new party's attachment to the kingdom's constant principles: Islam, the monarchy, constitutional institutions, territorial integrity and Moroccan culture, he said the party's major action will be directed towards the development of Morocco and improving the living conditions of Moroccans.
