Yemen, Local, 11/2/2001

The Yemeni writers and men of letters announced in a statement that the Yemeni political security authorities last Friday detained two Sudanese researchers under charges of spying and having links to Osama Bin Laden.

News reports quoted the statement which was issued on October 29 saying that charges of spying and having links to Osama Bin laden and Israel were also addressed to the Sudanese Abdul Salaam Nour Eddine and his colleague Ahmad Seif, noting they were exposed to investigations and were badly treated.

The statement called for investigating the arrest process of the two men in Sanaa, noting that this is considered a great violation to freedom and democracy and a violation to human rights.

According to the statement, Abdul Salaam Nour eddine is a teacher of philosophy, who studied for many years at Sanaa and Aden universities and he has intellectual and criticism contributions and valuable research.

The statement continued that Abdul Nour is also in a mission from a British university to prepare a study about the Red Sea and this study also covers Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Sudan and Eritrea.

The statement indicated that in the context of his mission Nour eddine met with several high ranking Yemeni officials including the Yemeni prime minister Abdul Qader Bajmal and the political advisor for the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Abdul Karim al-Eryani.
