Mubarak's visit to Spain comes amidst critical circumstances
Egypt-Spain, Politics, 11/1/2001
Egypt's Ambassador to Spain Hussein Haridi Wednesday said that President Hosni Mubarak's visit to Spain on Thursday comes amidst critical circumstances on the Middle East and the international arenas.
Interviewed by "Radio Cairo" Haridi said that the visit coincides with the 10th anniversary of the Madrid Peace Conference in 1991. He expected that the President's meetings with Spanish officials would push forward attempts to resolve the current crisis of the peace process.
Spain supports President Mubarak's call for holding an international anti-terrorism conference, he said, adding that the Spanish leadership is ready to coordinate with Egypt in this regard.
'President Mubarak will hold a plenary session of talks with the Prime Minister then a tete-a-tete meeting with King Juan Carlos to tackle a number of issues of mutual concern, mainly the situation in the Middle East and the repercussions of the September 11 events in the United States,' he added.
'The President will attend the 3rd session of the Euro-Mediterranean Forum, due to take place in the Spanish island of Majorca as a guest of honour,' he added.
The Forum will tackle Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in the political, economic, cultural and social domains.
'The President's address is expected to cover the latest developments in the Middle East and Egypt's view regarding the way out of the vicious circle of violence in the Palestinian territories,' he added.
A report by the Egyptian trade representation office said that Egyptian exports to Spain scored a 37 percent increase in 2000 for the second successive year.
Egyptian exports to Spain reached $ 159 million in the year 2000.
Egyptian imports from Spain dropped to $ 207 million last year, compared to $ 441 million in 1999. Egypt exports to Spain cotton, textiles, furniture, handcraft, steel, ceramics and leather products.
