Maher receives US delegates to Sudan
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 11/1/2001

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher received on Wednesday the US delegation to Sudan, led by Robert Oakley, representative of the US envoy to Sudan.

Following the meeting, Oakley said that the two sides agreed to closely cooperate to sort out the Sudanese issue.

He welcomed IGAD's efforts in this regard, noting that "all parties should cooperate to reach one goal."

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Charles Snide said that the task of the team is to streamline the African efforts on Sudan.

He voiced support for the Egyptian efforts and likewise for IGAD's to achieve progress in many aspects related to the Sudanese issue.

"Some people might think that our focus will be on terrorism. Although terrorism is an important point, we will address other issues such as the situation in southern Sudan as far as the human rights and humanitarian situation were concerned," said Snider.

"The US concept and assessment of the Sudanese issue will be comprehensive," he added.
