The correspondent said that a high ranking official at the American intelligence CIA headed for Damascus by the beginning of October and met with security officials there.

British officials said that Blair wants to propose to President al-Assad the need of calming down conditions and implementing Tenet and Mitchell documents in preparations to resume final negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

On the other hand, the BBC said in a report on Wednesday that Blair's visit to Damascus is a great development aiming at showing off that the Western forces are working beside Muslim governments to repress terrorism.

The radio added that Blair hopes that Syria signifies a strong symbol of a Muslim state who is not known as a friend for the west but cooperates with it.

British officials stressed that there is no evidence on Syria's involvement in the attacks against the US on September 11, noting that Blair wants to have a dialogue with Syria on means of fighting terrorism.
