Maher receives US President envoy
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 10/31/2001

Foreign minister Ahmed Maher on Wednesday receives US president's personal envoy to Sudan Robert Oakley who will pay a brief visit to Egypt.

The meeting will take up the realization of a comprehensive reconciliation in Sudan within the context of efforts exerted by Egypt, Libya and the US.

Asked whether the Egyptian Libyan initiative on Sudan was stifled, Maher in statements on Tuesday, noted that whoever says that really wants this to happen.

On the latest developments of this initiative, Maher said Egypt received replies and others are expected from the various Sudanese parties on a memo of clarification presented to them by the initiative's two countries.

An Egyptian Libyan meeting is to be held shortly to discuss the coming step and the next drive in light of those replies, he added.

On whether or not the Egyptian Libyan ideas were accepted by the Sudanese parties, Egypt's top diplomat said they have been accepted. But the memo does not need to be ratified, he said.
