Syria, Politics, 10/29/2001

The Monte Carlo radio correspondent in Damascus said on Sunday that the investigation judge has set next Tuesday and Wednesday to try the two independent Syrian members of parliament for the city of Damascus Mam'moun al-Homsi and Riad Seif, respectively in open at the criminal court after the court of cassation refused the appeal submitted to it in the mid of October.

The correspondent added, according to the lawyer of the two members of Parliament, Anwar al-Bunni the two parliamentarians who were investigated, denied accusations addressed to them and they asserted their statements which concentrate on fighting corruption and contributing to reforms as were advocated by President Bashar al-Assad.

The correspondent added that the sentences of accusations addressed to Seif and al- Homsi range between two months to life- imprisonment and the accusations include among many other things the attempt to change the constitution, attacking the state, provoking sectarianism, negative resistance to legitimate authority acts and establishing secret societies.

She indicated that during the two past months the Syrian authorities arrested 10 figures who are interested in human rights and the civil society under the charges of violating the " red lines."

The correspondent continued that al-Bunni said that the other detained men including Riyadh al-Turk, the chairman of the political bureau of the communist party were brought before the extraordinary state security court, but the lawyers were not briefed with accusations addressed to them nor permitted to visit them.
