Moussa, Powell probe deteriorating situation in Palestinian lands

Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa and Secretary of State Colin Powell held talks Thursday on the worsening situation in the Palestinian lands and how to stave off further turbulence.

Powell renewed the US rejection of the re-occupation of the Palestinian self-rule areas, calling for exercising self-restraint and return to the negotiating table.

Their talks covered means to fight global terrorism. The Bush administration assured Moussa that the military action would not be the only tool in fighting terrorism and that political diplomatic measures would be used to dry out the terrorist groups' resources.

Moussa made clear that the Arab stance towards combating terrorism is based on an Arab anti-terrorism pact.

Moussa and Powell, furthermore, reviewed the conditions of the Arab communities in the US. Powell expressed the Bush administration's keenness to treat any problem facing Americans of Arab origin to ensure their safety.

The two officials agreed on the necessity of working to foil any attempt linking terrorism to Islam, stressing that culture difference should not be a reason for conflict but a basis for dialogue.
