Solana and peace in the ME

The higher representative for the foreign policy and security in the European Union Javier Solana has renewed the European position in support of reaching a solution to the Arab- Israeli conflict, according to UN security council resolutions especially UN resolutions 242 and 338.

In a statement to the Lebanese daily al-Nahar issued on Friday Solana stressed that Europe is committed to the basics of the Madrid conference for peace, whose 10th anniversary is celebrated very soon, called for the need of reviving the ME peace process according to unwavering principles on the ground of which the Madrid's conference was built and accepted by sides concerned and an international backing.

Solana described what is taking place in the Palestinian territories since more than one year as frightening, expressing the readiness of the European Union to provide the necessary support.

Solana also stressed the need of establishing an alliance in order to establish a just peace in the Middle East stressed the need of exerting efforts to get out of the difficult conditions inflected by the incidents of September 11.
