King Mohammed receives enthusiastic welcome in Tagounit and Mhamid-Al-Ghizlane
Morocco, Politics, 10/23/2001
Carrying on a tour started on October 14 in Moroccan central and southern provinces, Morocco's King Mohammed VI -accompanied by his brother Prince Moulay Rachid and his cousin Prince Moulay Ismail- visited on Monday the southern towns of Tagounit and Mhamid-Al-Ghizlane.
In Tagounit, the sovereign was briefed on a rural development program, worth 5 million DH (US$ 454,545) that features three major projects financed by the Mohammed V foundation for solidarity. Under the projects, several villages in the region will be supplied with drinking water, income-generating activities for rural women will be promoted, and traditional irrigation means and local handicraft products will be developed.
The sovereign also heard explanations on a wide-scale anti-desertification program in the southern Draa valley. The 13-year-long project (worth 12.87 million DH or US$ 1.17 million), started in 1992. It is implemented by the local association for the development of the Draa valley and the German agency for technical cooperation. It is meant to secure sustained and environment-friendly management of natural resources.
In the same locality, king Mohammed VI launched the construction works of a high school for a total value of 3 million DH (US$ 272,000).
In another small locality of Mhamid-Al-Ghizlane, the sovereign launched works for a modern plant for dates packing and a milker goat breeding project. The two projects will require 5 million DH (US$ 454,000). The milker goat project consists of a breeding farm and a cheese production unit.
