The political side of al-Yousefi visit to Syria
Syria-Morocco, Politics, 10/23/2001

In a report from Damascus, issued on Monday, the Jordanian daily al-Dostour said that the visit of the Moroccan prime minister Abdul Rahman al-Yousefi to Damascus to preside over the Moroccan side in the Syrian- Moroccan joint committee has political objectives.

In this regard, the paper noted the possibility that Morocco will play the role of the mediator between Damascus and Tel Aviv with the aim of finding an outlet to start ME peace negotiations on the Syrian track.

The paper added this comes in light of news reports which talks about American proposals, currently under discussions by Damascus and held consultations with the Arab states regarding them, especially as Morocco had played in the past the main role in preparation for the Camp David Egypt signed with Israel in 1978.

The paper said that relations between Damascus and al-Rabat have passed a phase of coolness that lasted for two decades and only improved recently under the desire of the two " young" leaderships to eliminate the differences of the past.

The paper explained in its report that al-Yousefi's visit to Damascus will exceed its economic framework towards further political openness between the two countries.
