Mrs. Mubarak opens new branch in Luxor
Egypt, Culture, 10/20/2001

Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak said the National Council for Women was not an-executive body and that it was built on performance by executive agencies for the good of Egyptian women.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the council's branch in the south Egyptian town of Luxor, she said that the key responsibility of the council and its branches nationwide was to examine the problems of women and suggest proposals.

Mrs. Mubarak called for upgrading the clubs of women and children across the nation in line with appropriate standards. She instructed the NCW branches to look into health, educational and social problems and forward relevant proposals to executive agencies.

She urged that girls be obliged under the law to apply for an ID upon turning 18. "The need arises to provide Egyptian women with the chance to actively get engaged in the public life, and consequently in political life," she added.
