Maher attends Euro-Mediterranean forum meetings in Morocco
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 10/18/2001

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher is due in Rabat on Wednesday to attend the meetings of the Euro-Mediterranean Forum to be held in Agadir on October 25.

The meetings of the forum chaired at present by Greece will be attended by the foreign ministers of Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Turkey and Malta.

The meeting aims at assessing reflections and consequences of the situation resulting from September 11 assault on the US and reaching a clear visualization on how to fight terrorism in addition to cooperation between the Arab and European sides, Egyptian Ambassador to Morocco Ashraf Za'aza said.

"It is necessary to reach joint and clear-cut stances as regards these issues, he said. But it is necessary to differentiate between terrorism and peoples' legitimate rights to defend their occupied lands," he added.

"It is also necessary not to confuse Islam with terrorism especially by Western media as that would only lead to more hatred and is not in the interest of anyone," he said.

King Mohamed VI has called for holding an emergency meeting of the foreign ministers of the Euro-Mediterranean Forum, during his meetings with a number of the forum's foreign ministers late September and early October, to examine issues pertaining to security in the area in the wake of Washington and New York blasts.
