Sudan for normalizing relations with the European Union
Sudan-European Union, Politics, 10/16/2001

The Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael has declared an agreement made between Sudan and the European Union to normalize relations between the two sides and to lift the economic sanctions imposed on Sudan through a detained work program currently under preparation in Brussels between the Sudanese embassy there and the development commission department at the EU.

In a statement to the Sudanese daily al-Rai al-Am issued on Monday following his coming back from Brussels where he is taking part in the Afro- European ministerial conference, Othman Ismael said that he had agreed with EU officials to a work program to be gradually implemented so as to normalize relations and lift the economic sanctions imposed by the EU on Sudan.

He stressed that the coming phase will be witnessing positive developments towards attaining a comprehensive solution and achieving peace in Sudan through efforts made by Arab and friendly states built on consultations he had held with his peers from Egypt, Libya, Nigeria and South Africa.

The Sudanese minister added that his meeting with the two foreign ministers of Egypt and Libya, revealed the care of both countries, who advocate peace initiative in Sudan, to join practical stages concerning the joint initiative to establish peace in the country after the opposition Sudanese coalition and the al- Ummah party sent their replies concerning the Egyptian and Libyan proposals.

He added that Nigeria will also work during the coming phase to crystallize several thoughts concerning peace in Sudan and commended the role played by the government of Abuja to improving Sudanese Ð American relations.

Concerning statements made by certain American officials over Sudan's role in the alliance against terrorism, the Sudanese foreign minister said that Sudan does not seek a bilateral coalition with the US in her campaign against terrorism, rather calls for an international act which can be attended by all states on equal footing under the umbrella of the UN.
