Morocco appoints honorary consul in Aleppo
Syria-Morocco, Politics, 10/15/2001

Morocco has appointed Mohamed Alae-Eddine Kiali as its honorary consul in the Syrian city of Aleppo and opened a new consulate there.

Kiali, a native of Aleppo, hails from a family friend of Morocco.

The new consul took office end of last week in a ceremony chaired by the Kingdom's ambassador in Damascus, Mohamed Frej Doukkali, who explained that the decision to open an honorary consulate in Aleppo is due to the economic, industrial and cultural importance of the city. The decision is also part of a general vision of openness and rapprochement initiated after last April's visit to Morocco by Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.

The two countries will convene end of this month a meeting of their joint commission and sign a package of cooperation agreements.

The new honorary consul expressed resolve to endeavor for the consolidation of cooperation between the two Arab states, mainly in economic and cultural realms.
