Regional-Indonesia, Religion, 10/13/2001
A number of Arab states have expressed readiness to help rebuild tens of houses of worship damaged or destroyed during the in 1998-2000 communal conflicts in Poso, in the Indonesian province of Central Sulawesi, Indonesian news agency "ANTARA" reports quoting a local official.
"Among the countries prepared to help are the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Kuwait. The grants are to be disbursed at the end of this year at the latest," head of the local religious office Dahlan Tangkaderi said on Saturday.
The Indonesian government, through the 2001 State Budget, had also allocated funds to rehabilitate houses of worship and public facilities in Poso, he said.
"The rehabilitation program is likely to be started early next year after the security and order situation here have improved sufficiently," he said.
Some 31 houses of worship, most of them mosques, were totally destroyed during the communal strife.
