OIC and EU support strong initiative to resume peace process in the Middle East
Regional-European Union, Politics, 10/13/2001
"It is necessary to launch a strong initiative to give impetus to resuming the peace process in the Middle East," said in Brussels Friday ambassadors of the Organization of Islamic Conference members countries at a meeting with Belgian foreign minister, Louis Michel.
The Belgian official, whose country is currently holding the European Union chairmanship, stressed that although the situation in the middle east is not the cause of international terrorism, it could nurture it.
Saudi ambassador, Nasser Alassaf, denounced those who invoke Islam to commit terrorist acts and insisted Islam does not have any relation with terrorism.
The head of the Belgian diplomacy said he thanked Islamic ambassadors for the OIC's condemnation of the terrorist attacks.
The Belgian foreign minister and the OIC ambassadors also renewed the need to deepen inter-civilization rapprochement as part of an encounter projected in New York on the eve of the UN general assembly.
