Moroccan relief assistance to Afghan populations handed
Morocco-Afghanistan, Local, 10/12/2001
A Moroccan delegation, led by advisor to the King, Abbas El Jirari, handed over this Friday morning in Islamabad Morocco's relief assistance to displaced Afghan populations.
The ceremony was held in the presence of secretary at the Pakistani ministry on charge of Kashmir affairs, the northern and border regions, Shafqat Ezsi Shah, the delegate of the UN High Commissioner of Refugees (HCR) in Pakistan, Hasim Utkan, and Morocco's ambassador to Pakistan, Ahmed El Rhaidi.
Two Moroccan aircraft loaded with 16 tons of basic foodstuffs and 12 tons of blankets flew Wednesday from Kenitra, 40 km north of Rabat, to Islamabad, while a third aircraft loaded with a shipment of 10 tons of medicine, flew Thursday afternoon to Pakistan with on board the Moroccan delegation entrusted with handing over the aid to the Afghan displaced populations in Pakistan and other border regions.
The delegation comprises officials, representatives of political parties and trade unions and executives from the Mohammed V solidarity foundation and the Moroccan Red Crescent. Social workers are also part of the delegation.
King Mohammed VI decided earlier this week to dispatch a relief assistance to Pakistan and gave instructions so that contacts be immediately made with Pakistani authorities to ensure the distribution of this assistance to Afghan refugees the soonest possible.
King Mohammed VI -chairman of the Mohammed V solidarity foundation- has also instructed the foundation to disburse 2 million Dirhams (around US$ 181,800) to help meet needs for assistance to Afghan displaced population, expressed by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
The amount will serve to provide baby food, foodstuffs as well as blankets, tents and other water supply items.
